Program Summaries

Information in this summary is based mainly on the SEG Procedures Manual and is subject to change. Any SEG member interested in joining or providing input to a committee is encouraged to contact the committee chairman or Jennifer Swanson, Geoscience Education Manager, at the SEG Business Office. The 1999-2000 SEG Executive Committee Liaison to these programs is Dr. Steven L. Roche, Vice-President.

Committee chairmen are appointed by the SEG President. All committees meet at the SEG Annual Meeting and at other times as determined by the committee chairmen. Where the word "Sections" is used, it includes Associated Societies and Student Sections.

Programs may be available in the following categories:

Continuing Education (CE) Short Courses

CE Committee Chairman: Don Herron

CE Committee members act as advisors and examiners of the Continuing Education Program. The primary objectives of the committee are as follows:

Approved courses are included on the program immediately and may be scheduled at any time thereafter. In the spring, letters are sent to all Sections, requesting their participation and preferences of courses. The public schedule is updated as needed. Groups wishing to schedule a course must contact the SEG Business Office at least 3 months in advance.

Courses are presented within one of the following three basic modes:

SEG Sponsored (Public) Course

Under SEG sponsorship, course presentation will be at a time and place selected by the Business Office staff in mutual agreement with the course speakers. The SEG makes all arrangements and prepares such other promotion and services as necessary. Course fees are approved by the Executive Committee. The current public course tuition (member/non-member), in US dollars and subject to change, is as follows:

SEG Section Sponsored Course

A Section/Associated Society may sponsor a course presentation and pay a fee, set by the Business Office, to offset operating expenses, SEG overhead, and instructor honorarium. The current base tuition, in US dollars and subject to change, for Section sponsored courses, is $1500 per day. Fee schedules for attendees may be set by the Section/Associated Society. Meeting room, audiovisual equipment, instructor travel expenses, and reproduction of course notes are the responsibility of the sponsoring organization. 50% of the profits, if any, will accrue to the Section or Associated Society, and 50% will accrue to SEG. Losses will be borne by the sponsoring organization.

Private and/or Industry Sponsored Course

Courses can also be scheduled for companies or groups not considered SEG Sections. The fee for in-house presentations is approved by the Executive Committee to cover operating expenses, SEG overhead, and instructor honorarium. Meeting room, audiovisual equipment, instructor travel expenses, and reproduction of course notes are the responsibility of the sponsoring organization. The current base tuition, in US dollars and subject to change, for private courses is as follows: After the minimum number of full-paying registrants for a public course is reached, a maximum of two unemployed and three student members may register for the course at $25 per course day; one university professor may register at $50 per course day. Additionally, one SEG Continuing Education Committee member may attend at no charge. Each university professor and committee member is required to submit an in-depth course critique.

Distinguished Instructor Short Course (DISC)

DISC Subcommittee Chairmen: Peter Duncan and Simon Spitz

The DISC subcommittee reports to the CE Committee. The CE Committee recommends a candidate for chairman to the SEG President for appointment. Additionally, the EAGE Executive Committee may appoint a co-chairman to represent their interest in the program.

The primary objective of the DISC Subcommittee is to provide an annual one-day short course on a topic of popular interest and at a nominal cost to the SEG membership. The SEG Foundation is charged with solicitation of funds from sponsoring corporations to support this effort.

The DISC subcommittee presents several candidates to the CE Committee. The CE Committee then recommends its preferred candidate to the Executive Committee for approval. Historically, the CE Committee's nomination for the DISC has been submitted for approval by both SEG and EAGE Executive Committees.

The SEG DISC Subcommittee is responsible for:

Each year, the DISC is given at approximately 20 locations worldwide. Letters inviting participation are sent to all Sections. A copy of the letter is also sent to the Global Affairs Committee Chairman. Because it is anticipated that more Sections will desire to host the DISC than feasible, local Sections are encouraged to submit a sponsorship proposal describing the resources that they propose to invest to ensure it is a success at their site. The SEG Global Affairs Committee is responsible for submitting recommendations on the non-U.S. venues to the DISC Subcommittee for approval. For presentations in Europe, EAGE will provide venue recommendations to the DISC Subcommittee for inclusion in the schedule. The Executive Committee approves the final schedule of venues.

EAGE will be responsible for the coordination of DISC presentations in Europe.

SEG intends to offer the DISC at a nominal charge. However, membership in both the SEG (or EAGE for co-sponsored presentations) and the local sponsoring society is required for attendance. The fee for non-members is equivalent to the course fee (currently $25) plus the membership dues for the SEG and/or local Section; the fee collected will be applied towards membership in the same. At the request of the local society, the requirement for membership in the local society may be waived.

Course notes are provided to each attendee. The DISC will be videotaped once during the annual tour. Course notes and videotapes are provided to SEG Student Sections at no charge and to other Sections upon request for a nominal fee.

The SEG Business Office is responsible for:

The local SEG Section is encouraged to seek corporate sponsorship to defray DISC costs. The Section is responsible for the meeting room and break refreshments; lunch is optional. The Section is also responsible for providing local publicity and audiovisual equipment. Translation of the course notes, if desired, is the responsibility of the Section. Finally, the Section must find local volunteers to handle registration duties, including: DISC program timeline

SEG Distinguished Lecture (DL)

Committee Chairmen: Bob Brown and Lynn Comeaux

The Technical Program Chairman of SEG's International Exposition and Annual Meeting is candidate for chairman. For example, the 1998 Technical Program Chairman is candidate for the 1999-2000 Distinguished Lecture Committee Chairman. Additional committee members consist of the four prior years' Technical Program Chairmen and other qualified SEG Members as appointed by the Chairman. Committee members serve a five-year term.

The primary objective of the Distinguished Lecture Committee is to compile a list of ranked candidates for consideration by the Executive Committee. The DL Committee chooses speakers approximately 2 years in advance. The Executive Committee is responsible for final approval of the lecturers prior to asking the lecturers to serve.

Lectures are about one hour in duration (including a question-and-answer session). Two lecturers present in a given year: one in the spring and one in the fall. Each lecturer makes 12-15 presentations, mainly at local Sections. The SEG Business office mails letters to all Sections in North America for consideration in the tour. The SEG Business Office schedules and arranges the tour and coordinates closely with the lecturer to schedule and arrange a cost-effective travel itinerary.

In addition to the North America tour, the lecturer may tour up to one week at a location in conjunction with a regional meeting outside North America. The DL Committee selects the location of this tour.

There is no charge to participants for this program.

SEG-AAPG Distinguished Lecture

Committee Chairmen: Bob Brown (SEG), Lynn Comeaux (SEG), and Paul Weimer (AAPG)

SEG cooperates annually with AAPG to support a jointly endorsed lecture. The purpose of this effort is to bring local geophysical and geological groups into a common forum. The lecture should therefore be relevant to both disciplines. Each year, SEG and AAPG Distinguished Lecture Committees agree upon and submit a lecturer for approved by both Executive Committees. This program is very similar to the SEG Distinguished Lecture but slightly more complicated due to the involvement of two organizations.

The two Business Offices alternate years in handling tour scheduling and logistics. AAPG organized the inaugural 1999-2000 tour; SEG's responsibilities begin in 2000-2001. To accommodate this program, one of the two (Fall or Spring) SEG Distinguished Lectures is replaced by the SEG-AAPG Distinguished Lecture. The fee for this program is $335 for SEG Sections and AAPG Societies and $270 for universities.
